PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX — Providence gave up an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Grace Efosa came through with two pressure free throws with four seconds left, sending the Friars past San Diego State on Saturday at the Women’s Cancun Challenge.
San Diego State got six points from Veronica Sheffey in a two-minute stretch late in the fourth quarter, with her shot at the 1:19 mark pulling the Aztecs within 53-52. Cali Clark then hit two free throws for San Diego State, giving it a 54-53 lead with 23 seconds to go.
Efosa then took a shot, got fouled, and converted the final free throws. She finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Emily Archibald came through with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Brynn Farrell scored 12 points, 10 coming in the third quarter. The Friars (4-5) had a 37-29 lead in rebounds and were 14-for-16 from the free-throw line.
The Aztecs (8-1) got 16 points from Sheffey; Clark came through with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
