Northern Iowa led by as many as 11 against West Virginia on Tuesday evening in Cancun but it was the resilient Mountaineers who mounted a comeback to emerge victorious, 60-55.
A mere 7-28 from the field in the first half, coach Bob Huggins’ team flipped the script in the second, knocking down 13 of its 26 attempts en route to the come-from-behind win. The Mountaineers were also boosted by 32 bench points compared to just 16 from the Panthers.
West Virginia received contributions up and down the roster. However, no one would outmatch Miles McBride. McBride finished with a game-high 18 points and tallied five boards. Jermaine Haley added 10 points and seven boards.
Isaiah Brown’s 15 points were the bright spot for UNI. The Panthers also outrebounded the Mountaineers 40-35.
West Virginia will move on to the Riviera Championship Game and will face Wichita State. The game is slated for 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday evening. Northern Iowa will take on South Carolina in the Third Place Game at 6 p.m. ET.
