A day ago, both South Carolina and Northern Iowa struggled to find the bottom of the basket. Wednesday even was a different story. The Panthers connected on nearly half of its shots and came up with a couple of timely buckets down the stretch to capture the victory, 78-72, over the Gamecocks.
AJ Green played with pure ice in veins in the game's final moments. The sophomore from Cedar Falls scored eight consecutive points across the last 30 seconds to pull away from South Carolina. It was all part of a game-high 26-point performance, including a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line.
Trae Berhow (15 points) and Antwan Kimmons (10 points) also finished in double figures for head coach Ben Jacobson.
A.J. Lawson delivered his biggest performance of the Cancun Challenge. The Ontario native collected 20 points for the Gamecocks. Maik Kotsar added 12 points, as did Alanzo Frink. Jair Bolden finished with 11.
Despite shooting 50 percent from the field, South Carolina was just 7-19 from dep and 5-11 from the charity stripe.
